Foundations

Drawing on previous editions of the GESDA Philosophy Lens and an invited contribution in the 2024 GESDA Science Breakthrough Radar® titled the ‘Future of Social Sciences and Humanities,’ GESDA developed the concept of ‘Planetarised Humanity’ to explore our evolving relational condition guided by GESDA's three fundamental questions:

• Our relation to ourselves: “Who we are, as humans?”,
• Our relation to each other: “How can we live together as societies?”, and
• Our relation to the planet: “How can we ensure the sustainable future of our planet?”

‘Planetarised Humanity’ was subsequently featured as the overarching theme of the 2025 GESDA Anticipation Workshop. The workshop convened 25 leading experts from across the social sciences and humanities to anticipate together how science and technology advances might transform human identity, restructure societies, and redefine our relationship with the planet.

Rationale, Opportunities & Aim

The Planetarised Humanity concept has emerged at a critical inflection point where accelerated socio-technological co-evolution meets growing awareness of our planetary interdependence.

GESDA’s Anticipation Workshop has catalysed a vibrant community of visionary research practitioners and potential partner institutions eager to advance this framework. This unique confluence of intellectual momentum, institutional readiness, and societal relevance creates an unprecedented opportunity for GESDA to establish thought leadership in this domain.

The Planetarised Humanity Initiative (PHI) aims to translate the research insights and cross-disciplinary perspectives from the 2025 GESDA Anticipation Workshop into tangible impacts across GESDA's stakeholder communities.

Strategic Vision

GESDA’s strategic vision to advance PHI towards an actionable global platform is anchored in five key insights resulting from the workshop:

1. Anticipated emerging science and technology will radically transform the most basic features of our reality.
2. These transformations will challenge our fundamental assumptions about what it means to be a human, how we can live together as societies and in a sustainable relationship with the planet.
3. Anticipating these conceptual disruptions is essential to align emerging science and technology with human values and societal needs across disciplines and sectors.
4. Leaders across GESDA’s communities need both conceptual frameworks and practical tools to integrate these emerging insights into their spheres of action.
5. GESDA is uniquely positioned to provide the anticipatory expertise, research credibility, multi-stakeholder community networks, and collaborative interfaces necessary to address these critical needs.

Framework

The Planetarised Humanity Initiative (PHI) will establish a global platform to address how emerging science and technologies transform our fundamental understanding of humanity through a three-tier approach: Philosophy Lab, Translational Hub and Global Sensorium.

Project: Meta-Network

Anticipated scientific breakthroughs demand visionary frameworks to shape humanity’s response to potential disruptions. Acting as a premier catalyst for future-oriented institutions and visionary practitioners working in science anticipation from a planetarised humanity perspective, GESDA will connect anticipatory thinking with practical action across disciplines, sectors and communities to navigate complex transformative challenges with purpose.

Level 1: Philosophy Lab

Anticipated emerging science and technology fundamentally challenge core humanity concepts, creating urgent demand for anticipatory frameworks. Through premium content and methodologies for high-level convenings and consulting services, the PHILOSOPHY LAB will develop anticipatory conceptual frameworks to help shape the human, societal and planetary implications of emerging topics identified in the Science Breakthrough Radar®.

Level 2: Translation Hub

A critical execution gap always remains between advanced conceptual thinking and practical implementation across sectors, which requires translation expertise from theory to action. The TRANSLATION HUB will fill this gap by translating anticipatory conceptual frameworks into sector-specific toolkits, methodologies, and implementation practices tailored for stakeholders seeking anticipatory advantage in addressing complex challenges.

Level 3: Global Sensorium

Human, societal and planetary innovations emerging outside traditional channels represent untapped intelligence responding to and shaping science and technology disruptions. By creating a global sensing network for emerging social knowledge and practices, the GLOBAL SENSORIUM will develop unique data assets and insights that enable comprehensive science anticipation intelligence for more resilient anticipatory frameworks.
