Research Leader & Merit ResearcherNatural History Museum

I'm a Research Leader at the Natural History Museum, where I co-lead the Biodiversity Futures Lab with Adriana De Palma. Our lab is working for a more positive future for nature and a fairer future for people. I also co-lead the PREDICTS project (Projecting Responses of Ecological Diversity In Changing Terrestrial Systems) which aims to model globally how local terrestrial biodiversity responds to human pressures and to use these models to project potential biodiversity futures under alternative scenarios of socioeconomic development. PREDICTS estimates the Biodiversity Intactness Index (BII), which has been widely used in science-policy reports as well as research papers, and which is a Component Indicator in the CBD's Global Biodiversity Framework. The Museum also makes BII available for commercial use. I was a Coordinating Lead Author on the first IPBES Global Assessment of biodiversity and ecosystem services, and scientific advisor on Sir David Attenborough’s documentary, “Extinction: The Facts”. Other research interests have included phylogenetic comparative methods and macroevolution, often using macroperforate planktonic foraminifera as a model system because of their unparalleled fossil record.
