Dr. Richard Muyungi Heads Environment and Climate Change in Tanzania’s National Energy Utility, -TANESCO, one of the largest electricity Companies in Eastern Africa. He has more than 30 years of extensive experience working with the government, UN organizations, non-governmental organizations and the private sector in the area of climate change in particular climate finance focusing on Africa and the least developed countries. He is a member of the Standing Committee on Finance and the outgoing member of the Green Climate Fund Board of Directors, representing Africa. He is the first Chairman of the Global Adaptation Fund Board under the Kyoto Protocol. Prior to the current position he was the Director of Environment, Vice President’s Office for more than 15 years; and currently also Chairman of the Board of Trustees at the Institute for Environment and Development Sustainability. He is also the Founding Chairman of the Least Developed Countries Fund; Chairman of the Subsidiary Body for Technological and Scientific Advice (SBSTA) of the UN Climate Change Convention and Adviser to former President Dr. Jakaya Kikwete on Climate Change and green economy issues. He has also chaired other international UN Bodies and processes particularly in the area of Climate Change, Desertification and Biodiversity. He has undertaken various consultancies with UNEP, AfDB; World Bank; Adaptation Fund; GEF and UNFCCC on climate finance and green economy and currently he is also a regional consultant (EAC countries) for the Regional Needs Based Climate Finance Access Strategy under the UNFCCC. Dr. Muyungi has a master’s degree in Environmental Protection and Management from Edinburgh University and a PhD in Climate Change and Sustainable development from the University of Dar Es Salam.
