Martin Smith is Head of Policy Lab at Wellcome, which aims to bring creativity and innovation to Wellcome’s policy products and processes. He is responsible for external policy relating to Wellcome’s investment in discovery research, with the aim of ensuring a thriving environment for research. He is also responsible for cross-cutting external policy issues that require Wellcome's attention to ensure that our mission of solving global health challenges can be achieved.

Before joining Wellcome, Martin worked as a Specialist for the UK House of Commons Science and Technology Committee, and has worked at a range of science learned societies including the Royal Society, the British Ecological Society and the London Mathematical Society.
