Kevin Esvelt is an Associate Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Lab and a co-founder of two non-profits: SecureBio and the SecureDNA Foundation. Esvelt’s laboratory and nonprofits seek to safeguard biotechnology against mistrust and misuse by pioneering new ways of working with communities to apply ecological engineering techniques, developing early-warning systems to reliably detect catastrophic biological threats, applying cryptographic methods to enable secure and universal DNA synthesis screening, policy advocacy on global biorisks, and more. He holds a Harvard PhD in Biochemistry, invented CRISPR-based gene drive, and is featured in the Netflix documentary "Unnatural Selection.
