Gonçalo Abecasis is Senior Vice President and Chief Genomics & Data Science Officer at the Regeneron Genetics Center, where he leads large-scale efforts to connect human genetic variation with disease biology and therapeutic discovery.
A statistical geneticist by training, Abecasis has been a major contributor to methods and infrastructures that made population-scale genomic analysis possible. His academic work at the University of Michigan helped advance genome-wide association studies, sequencing-based analysis and the interpretation of very large genetic datasets, while training a generation of researchers in statistical and population genetics.
At Regeneron, he applies these approaches at industrial scale, integrating genomic data from large cohorts with health information to identify disease-associated genes, validate therapeutic targets and accelerate precision-medicine research.
