Caroline Lustenberger

Group Leader, Neural Control of Movement LabETHZ

Dr. Caroline Lustenberger is a neuroscientist, author, and lecturer at ETH Zurich, where she leads the Sleep Lab within the Neural Control of Movement Lab. Caroline earned her PhD from ETH Zurich and conducted postdoctoral research at both UNC Chapel Hill (USA) and ETH Zurich, where she developed innovative closed-loop EEG systems for modulating sleep and behaviour. Supported by various prestigious grants, including the SNSF Ambizione career grant, she established her own research group to further advance her work on sleep modulation and health and regularly publishes in leading scientific journals. Her research explores how sleep-related brain oscillations support recovery processes in the brain and body, such as cardiovascular functions. She combines advanced assessment methods, closed-loop neuromodulation, and wearable technologies in humans to pioneer new approaches to understanding and enhancing sleep. By bridging rigorous laboratory studies with real-world applications, her work aims to develop transformative interventions for health and well-being across the life- and healthspan. Caroline is also the co-founder of the Herencia initiative, which combines research, healthcare, and social entrepreneurship to accelerate Alzheimer’s biomarker and treatment development within a unique genetic cohort in Colombia.
