Alex Hernández-García is an Assistant Professor at Université de Montréal and a Core Academic Member at Mila. His research develops active and generative machine-learning methods to accelerate scientific discovery, with applications ranging from new materials and energy technologies to drug and antibiotic discovery. He is particularly interested in GFlowNets, molecular modelling and AI for climate-related challenges. Before joining the faculty, he was a postdoctoral researcher at Mila working with Yoshua Bengio and David Rolnick, after completing a PhD in cognitive science at Osnabrück University. Hernández-García is also an advocate of open, reproducible and environmentally conscious science and of critically examining the societal impacts of AI.
